Blood & Money

** ARCHIVE **

Everyone knows that families are riddled secrets and lies. So, is it love that keeps us together? Guilt? Money?

Ties that bind are one thing, but a rope around your neck is quite another.

Rascally Scoundrels are critically acclaimed playwrights Rosalind Wyllie and Alison Carr, along with dramaturg Degna Stone. Blood & Money - a darkly humorous, provoking double-bill – was the trio’s first collaboration.

Two short plays linked by the idea of sisters, of relationships stretched to breaking point but held together by that family tie, and the writers came up with two very unique and exciting takes on the subject.

Carr’s drama Blood sees Susan track down her younger sister Elle to the tatty back yard of an equally tatty flat. Fifteen years ago their 11-year old sister Charlotte disappeared. A recent grim discovery has provided a long sought after resolution, but Elle has her own idea about Charlotte’s fate.

In Wyllie’s comic drama Money, Tina is always picking up the pieces of older sister Jeanie’s disastrous life. Jobless and recently dumped by her boyfriend, Jeanie’s future is not looking good. But now Tina and her wealthy husband have a proposition to make – it’s payback time.

Extracts from the production were showcased at Northern Stage as part of ‘First In Three’ – audience feedback included:

“Drew you in, conflicted yet close relationship; thought the dialogue between them was excellent …”

“It was convincing and emotional”

“Great pace and dialogue”

“ … very interesting writing; really enjoyed them”

Blood & Money (Krev a Peníze) was selected for performance at the Prague Festival Fringe 2010. The play ran at Divadlo Na Prádle – Kavárna in June.

“a well rehearsed duo of plays … [Blood is] a quirky scenario that is funny at first until we realize that maybe we shouldn’t be laughing … [Money] holds our attention and laughs … witty and dry … the actors are due a hand for their versatility … Degna Stone deserves a cap off for her directorial debut … all in all, a high point of this year’s Fringe” - expats.cz
